Topic: College Admissions: Justice & Merit in Admissions to Selective Residential U.S. Universities
Professor Alcorn will discuss his research on this topic, which grew out of his several years of service as chairperson of the Faculty Committee for Admissions and Financial Aid at Trinity College.
He will discuss current issues in admissions: standardized tests; actuarial and clinical judgments; corruption; affirmative action; as well as special dispensation for athletes, legacies and offspring of university staff and professors.
He will make the case that various kinds of individual merit and group merit are salient criteria of justice in admissions decisions, in a matching game in which customers (matriculants) are inputs to one another’s education and experience in a total institution. He will also discuss why selective universities do not expand enrollments, and do not make selections by lot among qualified applicants.
